At the risk of repitition...
Jul. 31st, 2003 07:41 pmThe story's from a week ago, it seems; normally I've a much better eye for headlines than this. All I can do is plead sickness with this one. Essentially it strikes rather hard at the 'search and siezure without warrant or due process' provisions of Section 213... a set of provisions that weren't looked at closely enough in the We must do SOMETHING! panic that followed in the wake of the September terrorist strikes. Remember? That whole mess that set Dubya up to swagger about like a tin-plated despot? So many lives lost in those attacks (some of them blood relatives; my Father is alive only because he had jury duty on the other side of the state that day, otherwise he would've been in his office...), and I can't really fault -everyone- in Congress for being panicced. But I -do- fault the people that put the Patriot Act together; they knew -exactly- what they were doing, and that kind of intentional snooping malice is not to be forgiven lightly.
But it -is- good news. It means that some of our Congressmen are waking up again.
Of course, Pat Robertson and Jerry Falwell are just going to blame -this- on the G/B/L/T community too, but what the heck. :p
