Aug. 23rd, 2004 09:41 amSo I'd just settled in to chat with someone, when the DSL modem starts losing synch. It did that, about every twenty minutes or so, for about and hour... after which it went out completely. Given the past performance with Verizon, this was hardly a shock, so I hooked my little headset phone up and rang TechSupport.
And found out that, oddly enough, the problem seemed to be on -my- end this time. Hrm. Much fiddling about ensued, with me crawling hither and yon in the magical realm of 'Under the Desk'. In the process, I managed to yank the power cord out of the KVM -and- the DSL modem. I snaked the wires back up and plugged 'em in randomly; they use virtually identical power feeds. And suddenly the DSL was working, and the KVM was going nuts.
Well, that answered that. But with the KVM down, -nothing- here is usable... so the good power feed went back to the KVM. This morning, on the way back from dropping Megan at work, I picked up a new power adapter for the DSL modem... it's now routed through the UPS that a wonderful person sent me, along with the G3. And I'm back up on the air again. Woo.
Laundry's rolling. When it goes into the dryer, I need to wash my hair again; apparently I didn't get all the soap out this morning. Ah well. Anyway, that's what's going on here.

Date: 2004-08-24 07:46 am (UTC)Me, I have my sole "ancient" (Circa 1999) PIII 500Mhz, w/256MB ECC SDRAM, 20GB HDD (almost full) original DVD & CD-R/RW drives, SoundBlaster Live! and it's Running Win2k w/SP 3. I'm about to add either Mandrake 10.0 or SuSE 9.1 Professional to it as well and dual boot.
But if/when I ever get Social Security Disability, it will be a huge 1st check as it will be retroactive to last November. At that time I'm gonna buy myself something on the order of this (http://www.livejournal.com/users/angrykeyboarder/30006.html) :-)
So I'm a geek, just not nearly as much of one as you. :-)

Date: 2004-08-24 10:19 pm (UTC)Also... for the payout on SSDI... figure the monthly figure is going to be 1/4 -> 3/8 of your prior income; I went from a 42k/year job to a just under 11k SSDI check. It may be that it's a flat rate that has nothing to do with income; I honestly don't have that information where I can get to it. I just knot that the loss of most of my income was crippling; the long term result is that we're losing the house.

Date: 2004-08-25 01:39 pm (UTC)No. Wrong answer. That's what Social Security is counting on; the process is so obnoxious that folks will give up no matter how justified the claim is. Never give up, never surrender. Talk to a lawyer; for SSDI claims a lot of attorneys will push back their bill until your claim is finally approved, and they're a God sent ally when it comes to the reams of repetitive paperwork involved. Trust me.

Date: 2004-08-25 06:23 pm (UTC)My "crawl into a hole" remark was regarding the news that I won't get retroactive pay. I was counting on that money and quite upset that I won't be seeing it now.
