Run Down

Yes, ladyfurs and gentlebeings, mowed down. Cut down in the prime of life. Maimed from out of the blue, and left stunned on the ground as the attacker raced away.

A WalMart shopping cart.

To explain, it's VERY windy here today. Enough that the gusts are knocking folks over and pushing even larger vehicles all over the road. Normally, that wouldn't phase me much; I am, after all, the world's only 350lb cabbit. Such things might rock me, but I generally lean into it and keep moving. This time, it just didn't work out that way, though.

I'm pulling a longer shift today, to cover the office while most everyone else is stuck attending a meeting at Main. So instead of leaving work roughly 11:30ish, I took a lunch break... which meant a leftover box lunch from yesterday's Microsoft CIO Summit and a large Coke from McD's up the road. There's a WalMart in that same shopping center, and I've been twitching to buy either another nightgown or some cute pjs, so I parked the truck and headed off across the lot for the store.

I didn't make it. A woman leaving the store let go of her shopping basket to fish her keys from her purse, and the wind grabbed said buggy and whipped it across the lot. It slammed into my right knee just as I shifted my weight to that leg, so down I went like a (very large) sack of potatos. The cart tumbled OVER me, landed on the wheels again, and then tore off across the lot like the hounds of hell were after it and slammed into the side of an H3 Hummer (it bounced off, no damage to the Humongous, figures). The poor woman was frantic, trying to pick me up (!!) from amidst her spilled parcels and apologizing over and over again. I'm a bit sore, granted, but it was quite a shock.

Half an hour later... it's more funny than anything, but what the hell. :p
