Nightambre? Sweetie? Tell your darling hubby that I chased down that Celeron we were talking about... and after a lengthy argument with Intel's POSITIVELY HORRIBLY designed Support site, discovered that it's a ... 300mhz Celeron. Given that the beast I hauled out of your place tonight's got a 366 in it, that's what's gonna stay there till I can track down something with a bit more horsepower.
But then, a Celeron 366 -ought- to be as powerful as an older socket 7 AMD K6-2 400, right? That's the theory, anyway. According to the specs on the mainboard, it'll support any slot 1/socket 370 processor up through the Celeron 766... which'd make Megan's machine (which this is going to be) nominally faster than my Athlon 650 (which is currently clocked at 815, but that's beside the point). I just need to, on the zero cash I have, find one. :p Scanning through Pricewatch as I wait for my meds to kick in; maybe it'll be doable, but it's likely going to have to wait. It's a nice dream, though... a world where I don't have to toss her off /MY/ machine every time I get up.
Her chief complaint? Diablo II 'runs nicer' on my machine. *thinks hard* Got to be a way around it. I'm betting that the Celeron 366 will be an improvement over the Cyrix chip that's currently the core of her system. *thinks*
Crystal, if you read this... ask Kelly if the aging-but-still-rock-solid AMD 400 would have enough horsepower to do what he needs? I still can't get AIM to work, and I can't find your phone number, and it's 1:30am -anyway-... It's been in constant use for... *blink* cripes... six years. And it's still strong enough that Megan was playing The Sims on it without issue. *mutters* I can't abide the notion of discarding it. Up until about a year ago, the best machine I had was running off a Cyrix M-II 300; the idea of tossing something that's faster than my old workhorse was on a shelf to gather dust horrifies me. I still have that Cyrix chip... and the AMD 400 is plugged into the same mainboard that the Cyrix sat in for five long years. Barring and EMPulse attack on my neighborhood, that mainboard will -still- be running five years from now - The VA-503+ was the very best Socket 7 mainboard ever made, and made me an avid FIC fangirl.
*blink*
*ROFL*
According to the recently much revised FIC support site, the VA-503+ 'does not meet the hardware specifications required by Microsoft Windows XP. FICA has discontinued update support for the VA-503+, thus will not have any updates for support of this Operating System.'... which is really kinda funny. If I turn my head to the left, I can see Megan's machine and monitor from where I'm sitting. It's been running XP for almost four months now... :p But I didn't know it would never work when I made it work...
Somebody tell Mr Scot I'm gunning for his title of 'Miracle Worker'. :p
Somebody tell my bed I'm on my way.
Somebody tell my congressman that I want ... well, we won't go into this here.
Somebody hug my precious family... most of whom read my ramblings (though I'm not sure they -ever- make sense).
