Okay, now that I've picked my jaw up off the floor...

The G3 is up and operational, with a fresh install of OS X 10.2.8 to run on until the 10.3 cds arrive. The old root drive that'd categorically refused to boot, is perfectly accessible from within the new install.

There's no data loss. At all. And my old applications can simply be copied into the proper spot on the new drive... and they just work. After years of laborious Windows reinstalls, I'm utterly flabbergasted by this. Granted, reinstalling OS X took nearly two hours... but it just chugged along without needing constant button pushing from me, giving me time to flip through a magazine and eat my little microwaved Tombstone pizza-for-one. Many thanks (again) to [livejournal.com profile] wibbble, for patiently stepping me through getting the secondary NIC working, and for his kindness in the face of my well-meaning-but-still-very-clumsy-ignorance of Mac OS.

It's been a busy day; my entire computer setup out here (three machines, kvm + cables, network wiring, power cords... enough cabling to chock half of St. Louis) got ripped out, sorted, labled, and completely rebuilt. My desk now faces into the living room... AWAY from Megan's little pig sty and the HUGE pile of laundry. 'm tired of looking at it. The wiring's all hidden by clever use of the sofa. *whistles innocently* And I can now see the television, should anything ever come on that a) sounds interesting, and b) is on one of the three channels I can receive. :p

*stares in amazement as, once again, a simple copy installation works* Just like that, my iTunes library is rebuilt. You know, if this were a G5, I'd blow both the windows boxes away and put linux on 'em, and just use vmWare installs of windows to play my games (*looks at the vmWare guys who'll probably never see her journal anyway* Guys! I need Direct X support! Help me out, okie?).

Of course, the living room's stacked with all the various bits of hardware that've been living on, under, and around my desk. The little Compaq Presario that kept me sane while everything else was down is going to live once more as a test bed, so I can sort good from bad (and likely chuck 2/3's of the stuff). And best of all... since the LAN's up and operational again, I now have back my new DVD copy of Hell Comes To Frogtown.

I've caught up on LJ entries... including a post from a friend who's in the military. It's not rambling, it's not a 'personal' entry; it's a salute to a hero and an enraged shot at the sensationalist media who only gives the bad news. I'll use the same cut tag she did; the link will take you to her entry: Brian Chontosh's Uniform. It's important that people hear about things like this; this is real, not a draft-dodging politician sitting in a comfy & safe chair thousands of miles from real danger. Thank you, [livejournal.com profile] lostkun.

And now I'll shut up. For a bit.

I recieve a lot of articles like that from my family that I want to pass along, and for lack of a collection of e-mail buddies, Livejournal is the next best thing. I'm glad you appreciate them. I worry that I offend people by continously smacking war and service member coverage in their faces. n.n;

It needs to be in their faces, love. The media's sure as hell not going to properly report it. I may have nothing but rage and vitriol for the upper end of Command, but I've got a whole lot of respect for the common soldier.

They managed to do what I failed to. They've earned that respect...

*snugs* You need to stop beating yourself up over that, man. It's not failure; shit just happens.

Most - but not all - Applications on Mac OS X are 'bundles', which are actually folders disguised as files. Everything the application needs is in the bundle, and anything outside the bundle (preferences, for example) should be auto-created if it's not found.

Some applications are trickier, and install bits all over the place. Some utilities also need special installation - anything that's a preference panel, for example. Although, in 10.3 you can just double-click a prefpane, and it'll automagically install it for you.

I'm glad it's all running nicely. :o)
