May. 15th, 2004 04:08 amI'm slowly getting this poor little P400 configured to my own standards. The initial install had been geared towards... well, towards an inexperienced button pusher. Since said button pusher doesn't require my services, and the machine itself seems to be my only way online, certain things had to change.
Firefox, Thunderbird, Semagic, and Trillian needed to be installed (three of the four are done, Thunderbird is still downloading... dialup SUCKS HAIRY DONKEY BALLS!!!!111!!one!!won111)
Ahem. Now then. I'm very ... frayed, at the moment. Megan will be away almost all day tomorrow, so maybe I can get myself balanced again, eh?
I had a very lengthy chat with an honest-to-God AppleTech, and got stepped through a half dozen tests to try and isolate the problem. What it boils down to, believe it or not, is a fragged video card... apparently a G3 won't 'bong' if the vidcard fails, or is in the process of failing. *blinkblinks* Okay, as much as I like the G3, the designers at Apple really REALLY should take a hint from long standing PC architecture, and give a set of tones giving the poor sod pushing the buttons a half clue as to what's wrong. I mean, really now. Would it be so bloody hard? *shakes her head and mutters*
Given that the motherboard fires over, and all the LEDs light, /and/ the drives spin up, it apparently is ... video. Which I've been getting none of. :p Astoundingly simple, Watson. Would you like some tea? *pounds her head on the desk* Yes, I really AM this scattered right now, but it'd take more brain cells than I currently have functioning in any sort of a sane and chipper fashion to go back and properly mend things.
And now I'm babbling wildly at poor
elance and
wibbble. Send them hugs; they're being extraordinarily nice to the rambling semi-psychotic dolly.
Also up this evening was a casual comment from both Fire and Mercury that the Athlon problems may be as simple as a Sasser worm... And when I'm coherent tomorrow, I WILL check. Saving me a reinstall, and getting the DSL back up and operational would definitely improve my chances of perhaps someday wandering back into the same state that 'sanity' is known to reside in. Food for thought.
Okay, I've updated. I'm gonna stop now. How about that, an entire post with no profanity....

Date: 2004-05-15 09:09 am (UTC)Cold-boot the machine. Open up task manager via ctrl-alt-del, ctrl-shift-esc, or by typing taskmgr into a Run box. Look for the following processes. One or more may be present:
avserve.exe
avserve2.exe
hkey.exe
lsasss.exe (NOTE THE EXTRA 's'. lsass.exe is a valid Windows system file!)
skynet.exe
skynetave.exe
And anything taking up large quantities of CPU time. (Note that if there are two or more processes battling for CPU, end the one that looks the most suspicious. Sometimes valid system processes will fight over something with, say, antivirus software, and when you kill one the other finishes what it needed and behaves.)
Once the processes are killed, go get the patch and removal tool from Microsoft Download Center. Specifically, you want Security Update for Windows XP (KB835732) and Sasser (A-F) Worm Removal Tool (KB841720). Install the patch, run the removal tool, and you're set. If necessary, download the files on a different computer and burn them to CD.
If a Windows NT Authority shutdown kicks in, telling you you have 60 seconds and the computer will shut down, go to Run in the start menu and type shutdown -a. That'll abort a shutdown. Repeat as necessary.
Good luck, dollie.
