I don't know what number we're up to with the Chronicles of the Cursed Domicile, so we'll just give it a name.

I've mentioned some of the problems... this particular instance has come to light as a direct result of the hot water leak in the bathtub. Given the constant flow of 120-180 degree water, steam and condensation are becoming a problem in the bathroom... and the walls are starting to show signs of mold. In any other house, that would mean that the wooden walls have become saturated, and will need to be torn out and replaced.

This house has a mix of sheet rock and concrete walls. The answer's actually more interesting, and incredibly annoying and frustrating. In a battle to beat back the mold, Megan's been spending about an hour each evening trying to scrub the walls down and hold it at bay. This afternoon, her efforts revealed a tab of something, sticking up from the wall. Curious, she pulled it free... and an entire sheet of REPEATEDLY PAINTED OVER WALLPAPER came free in her hand. And what was under it? Another two layers of paint, and a SECOND LAYER OF WALLPAPER!

Astounded, she fetched me in from a chat with one of our neighbors, and showed me her findings. And I felt the rage start to bubble up again. I stepped out into the hallway outside the bathroom, and peered closely at the walls... and there, once you know to look for them, are the tell-tale seams of wallpaper under a ton of paint. And in my bedroom. And in her bedroom. And in the living room.

*pounds her head on the desk* WHY would someone do this? WHY?

Why? Beacuse it's easier to paint over the wallpaper than to remove it and prep the walls properly.

When I did house restoration for a short time in high school I tore down a wall that had multiple layers of wallpaper on it. It just seemed to be common practice back in the day.

Ick, wallpaper

Wallpaper is such a bitch. That's why I had my husband and mother-in-law remove the ghastly stuff from our bathroom. They bitched forever about it. Does it help with the mold? Can you just peel the wallpaper off and be rid of it or has it gone deeper? I'm with you on the mold problem. We're still getting our crawlspace fixed from the three burst pipes. Then we found out the dumbasses that owned the house before never fixed the crawlspace properly from when the wax ring on the toilet dried out and saturated the kitchen floor. So we're having to pay out of pocket for the pre-existing damages, and they're twice as much as what the insurance will cover (since they don't cover pre-existing stuff) Bleh, mold.
