Oct. 9th, 2003 07:00 pmThis post is made in fun. While it's frustrating, it's also perversely amusing. I do -not- expect anyone to bail my sorry arse out of this. I'm just going to have to reorder my plans a bit until money's there for what I need. Now then, carry on.
Hrm. The Athlon 950 and Gigabyte GA7-IXE combo seems to have developed an intense hatred for me. Rummaging about in my 'alternatives', I'm presented with four options:
None of them are particularly workable. :p I think I'm about at the extreme limits of beg-ability now, and -really- don't want to overdo it. I suspect poor Kelly's at the end of his wits with me... particularly since the 950 WORKS for him. And it's really funny, because two years ago, /I/ was the poor tech that the thing worked flawlessly for, and the original owner's frustration boiled over to the point where he handed it to me and made me promise he'd never have to see it again. [This, in case you were wondering, is the perversely amusing part.] Here I am, very nearly at that stage myself. *snickers* I wonder how long it'll 'like' whoever Igive it to.
In the board and processor's defense, they were a -dynamite- combo for nearly all of the elapsed two years... the system got taken down after a drive (literally) melted down, and has sat for about three months as I gathered pieces to rebuild it. It never complained, and only crashed -once-... and that was because I'd done something particularly stupid. :p So it's got a really good track record with me... which is why the silly thing's driving me bonkers now.
I think I'm just gonna let it sit for a few days, and then try it again. No point burning bridges, right? Anway.
*hugs*

- Honorable: Upgrade my Dad and little sister's machines as promised, and try to build my linux box on the P-II 350 that is my Dad's current machine.
- Cheating: Ugrade my Dad's machine, use -his- old machine to upgrade my little sisters, and keep one of the Athlon 650's for my linux box. or
- Grovel: Beg for a heatsink/fan that'll handle an Athlon 2000+ and a bar of 256m PC21000 memory.
- Divine Intervention: The Powers lift the curse that's causing the 950 to not function for me.
None of them are particularly workable. :p I think I'm about at the extreme limits of beg-ability now, and -really- don't want to overdo it.
