I'm glad to hear that you had good visits even if the means of getting there and the staying might've had problems.
It seems odd that a city with the nickname "City of the Broad Shoulders" should have such small hotel rooms. The first time I visited Rowan, the room I had at the Comfort Inn I was staying at was pretty small. It was a double bed with a television/writing desk set opposite of it with the bathroom coming off at a slight angle. The entire room was set in a bend of the building and I've seen closets that had more floor space. The room at the Days Inn that I stayed the second time was a bit larger; I at least had time to fall out of bed and land on the floor if I was so inclined :)
It's the time with friends that counts, not the time in the hotel rooms ;)
