It just works...
Mar. 21st, 2008 09:33 pm... until you want to do something non-mainstream.
Can Jihad be called on hardware/firmware? If so, would someone please tell me where to get my MacSword so I can participate?
Yah, I try to do something to take my mind off Vickie's death and instead end up near homicidal. It's been simply GREAT for the soul, let me tell you. And yes, this is the continuing saga of the 'Give Lauren a PowerBook' crusade...
So. Here's the basics:
And lo, the wanderer did come upon... oh, screw it. Anyway, through the charity of another (Kelly, and I have no idea why he puts up with me), a 60gb hard drive was procured to go into the PB. Great, fabulous, still leaves the 'how the eff do we get it installed?' problem, but at least once it's done it's got some space to use.
An hour later:
Well, the 'beat on it until it works' philosophy DOES work with Macs, it just takes ten times as long.
It's (finally) installing now. It was a combination of issues: Mac firmware can't handle NTFS drives at boot, the DVD was smudged and the secondary IDE cable is failing. In order: blew it away on my workhorse (which required taking it offline and rebuilding IT first), toothpaste and a fine cloth under running water and a kludge workaround that'll do for the moment.
And did you know that the bootstrap timings for the drives in a G3 are all routed through the system clock? And that a dead battery means no boot, no love and no nothin at all.
And the install crashed, so we go back to the drawing board.
Is it soup yet? -.-

So. Here's the basics:
- In my possession: G3/400 Lombard PowerBook. Functional
- Said PB lacks an optical drive, instead arriving with a Zip100 drive
- Numerous attempts to NetBoot (with huge help from my local LinuxGod Kelly) the PB to install Linux failed utterly, leaving Kelly both frustrated and annoyed. Chalk up one more Linux person who wants nothing to do with Macintosh hardware ever again. :(
- Further solo attempts up to and including minidistros wedged onto ZipDisks ALSO fail utterly.
- Scans through eBay in search of a functional optical drive net several potentials... all but one have now closed with me listed as a pinch-penny loser.
