It's been a ... difficult day. Emotionally I'm a basket case, and I have no clue why. It's been like that since I gave up trying to sleep... maybe it's just fatigue. But it's complicated by my native clumsiness; coming back into the apartment from the balcony, I managed to totally wipe out and land on the braced-and-bandaged knee. I also took out one of the two video cassette racks and nearly put my head through the picture tube in the idiot box out there. My rather bizarre luck held, though... I don't seem to have done any damage besides scuffing myself up and making my headache worse.

*fires up the laptop and discovers six new 'critical updates' since 2am* Most people blame the poor bastards at Microsoft for the almost continuous flow of security breaches and virii, which isn't exactly fair. Yes, the code is bloated. Yes, there are issues there. But they're also having to cope with an endless stream of two bit geekpunks who find a perverse joy in destroying other people's stuff. I almost pity the tech support people at MS. Almost. Then I remember some of their less charming features. Under the table dealings and kickbacks. Deliberately destroying small software outfits so that they can be the only fish in the pond and charge people accordingly. Deliberately crippling their own software so that it works poorly with other OS's.

*shrugs* Not gonna find angels in big business, no matter -who- sits at the desk. When Big Blue was top of the stack, they were no better. Some have suggested that MS is actually kinder than IBM was. And Apple are rabid isolationists, so there're no Prince Charming's there, either. And I'm rambling, so I'll move on.

Totally random note: I bet God does His (Her?) programming in Lisp.

Oh! I got linked to a marvelous piece of software last night. Seemingly out of nowhere, [livejournal.com profile] foxeryn messaged me with THIS LINK, and prodded me to go look at it. What I found was simply amazing. I've tried all manner of methods to keep track of my music, movies, software, and books, and have never had much luck with it. Invariably I'd hit a hurdle or pothole that would put me off the project, and then start all over with something new. Databases, spreadsheets, text documents... hell, at one point I had written programs in COBOL and ForTran to do the tasks. But this... it does everything. Granted it's a bit slow to manually key everything in, and it immediately made me lust for a barcode scanner, but I think I'll survive without. So I've been sitting here and keying things in, taking the time to redo file names so that everything is consistent, and after working on it for most of the day I still think it's wonderful.

Nothing else made it past the four hour mark. I've been doing this for almost thirteen. A good sign, I think.

Anyway, I'm babbling again, so I guess I'll go away. *hugs*.

Edit: It doesn't even require a dedicated barcode scanner. It'll use a digital camera! COOL!
