It's been... a very long night. I've -just- gotten back from the Veterinarian. The Emergency Vet, down in Annapolis. About 20 mins after Megan disappeared for a night out with some friends (none of which have cell phones, we're all too damned poor it seems), Kweepie took a rather frightening turn for the worse.

He'd struggle and struggle and fight, and then begin to cry... he couldn't stand. When I'd stand him up, he'd waver and then fall over and resume struggling. I babied and fretted and cried for hours, wondering when Megan was going to get home, trying to distract myself with Gaia between crying fits.

Apologies to the folks I was talking to for simply vanishing; when Megan got back I bustled around and packed up Kweepie and sallied forth to the only 24-hour vet that could handle exotics in a fifty mile radius... Anne Arundel Veterinary Emergency Clinic, which I'm going to abbreviate (as they do) AAVEC. The folks were all -very- nice, and the Vet herself was wonderful. Poor Kweepie has -never- been one to be happy about being poked, but she was so gentle with him he hardly fussed. Blood test, X-rays, exam...

The diagnosis from the vet up north (where one of my sis-in-laws works) was a spinal infection. A diagnosis which severely puzzled this vet, as there were no indications in bloodwork or x-rays. What she actually suspects is the beginning stages of scurvy, coupled with cavy diabetes... meaning he needs MORE vitamin C than even the stepped up dose I'd been giving him. I've got meds, special diet, instructions on what to do for his pain...

And a bill for $221.80.

The good news is that she believes that he'll recover... though he may never get full use of his back legs again. :( It's kinda fitting to give a crippled piggy to a crippled person, I guess... but it drives me bonkers seeing him hurting. But he should bounce back and be able to move around again, even if he never is able to win events at the Pigglyimpics. Yes, I'm serious. Stop laughing at me. Kweepie may be a spectator, but I'm betting that Molly can clean house at the Cross-the-Room Dash. Humor me, I really need a smile or three right now.

I'm going to crawl off now, I think, and try not to think of the havoc this bill is going to create. Kweepie's going to get better; I'm not going to lose my treasured sidekick. And for a long while tonight, I was =certain= that I was.
