So as all the hoopla dies down, I find myself pondering two years of near total Democrat control. There's a lot of excellent things that could come of it, but I know all too well how the base interests of man seem to interfere with the nobler pursuits. On an evening like this one where I'm so tired that coherent thought takes effort I find it difficult to keep my mind from wandering the 'what if' lines.

So... in spite of my instincts telling me this is a REALLY bad idea ( I know all too well how prolific some of you are :p )... tell me where it can go wrong or right. Tell me what you see, be it daemons or divine. Come fondle my crystal ba... Sing to me.

And try not to go to war with each other. Again.

Hmmm...

Where it could go wrong: The Dems come up with all sorts of nanny-state programs and tax us all into the poor house to pay for them.

The Reps become even more intransigent since they think it's payback for the Dems blocking everything when they were in power.

Crazy redneck with a rifle.

Troops are pulled out of Iraq too quickly leaving the country unstable and it turns into a haven for terrorists.

Where it could go right: Our allies gain back a modicum of respect for our country and start working with us again.

Our country grows a pair and stops cowtowing to special interests, corporations, foreign nationals, etc...

Programs that help needy people are crafted in a way that the middle class and the struggling economy isn't further punished.

I dunno. That's all that comes to mind. It's late and I can't brain much either. I'm off to bed.

Basic building blocks laid to provide universal health care for all Americans.

Improvement in the rights of workers, although this will be a long hard fight in many states.

Troops gone from Iraq, and negotiations ongoing with Iran and some of the tribes of Afghanistan. Foreign policy wounds from the Bush years healed over and the world at large no longer loving to hate America.

Taxes cut for most middle-class/working class Americans and small businesses, but raised for rich people and wealthy corporations. I don't know why most Americans seem to pay more in taxes as a proportion of income than I do, because you don't get any kind of value for money out of it.

The economy has turned the corner and is recovering. Mortgages have been re-negotiated in some cases to allow vulnerable people to stay in their homes.

Speaking as an external entity watching what's going on there from here (Which I find very interesting in and of itself), my own two cents is thus:
Best case scenario, your new guy manages to get the various runaway problems (Chiefly the War Against Stupidity, ie, Iraq, and the whole "Spying on our own citizens" thing) under control, and repairs some of the damage that's happened to your general world image.
Worst case? What I've seen of the man doesn't seem to indicate he's quite as stupid as Bush is, so I'd predict next to nothing getting done due to constant infighting between the two parties.
