I think that was supposed to be the first time he'd really used those kind of Dark Force powers. The idea is that using Dark Force powers visibly corrupts you, and until that point he'd had to maintain an appearance of innocence.
OTOH, Dooku used Force Lightning in Attack of the Clones without turning into a bag of ugly, so who knows.
