After an hour today on the phone with AT&T DSL Support with a very polite and thorough young man named 'Sid', I now have a trouble ticket number and have been escalated to Tier 2. In four hours, I'll be vanishing off the dial-up to call them back for a status update.

In the interim, the DSL modem's now been checked in every phone jack in the apartment, and the lines have been tested from their end. If I'm really lucky, I'll have my DSL service up in the next four hours. It would be a welcome reprieve.

Gaia's taking forever to load. *sigh* 'm gonna go play KoL for a while, I think.

*mutters darkly*

Yet another polite individual at the tech support phone. Yet another 'call back in x hours' answer. So at midnight I will -again- be disconnecting the modem to call AT&T.

'Polite' is not carrying a lot of weight. I'm getting snappish about this; I know it's not the tech on the phone's fault... but it seems to be the only way to make it clear that I'm tired of dicking around with this.

It took them NINE WEEKS to get the modem to me. And it's been TWO WEEKS since then, sitting on my desk and drawing power and being absolutely no fucking use while they fiddled about with things and made vague promises about service being 'restored'. How the hell do you 'restore' something that's never worked from day one?

While I've grumbled about it, I've been polite and good natured about things until tonight; the gentleman I just got off the phone with made the error of quibbling over times. I was told to call back in four hours. I gave them four and a half, and when I called back got told I was a half hour too early. He spent the rest of the conversation backpedaling after I snapped his head off; there's a REASON I take notes any time I'm on the phone doing more than idle chatter, and I've been pushed about as far as I'm willing to go on this.

So at midnight, I'll call back. I don't imagine it's going to be a pleasant conversation for the poor sod who gets lucky and picks up my call... and I'm at the point where it's only an 'in passing' concern. AT&T has been BILLING me for this service for three months... and I've not had even a second's worth of use for it. Worse, I'm still having to pay Mindspring-cum-Earthlink just to have any access at all. Friends and family are all pissed at me because I've got the phone tied up, Megan's peeved because I'm not getting this done 'fast enough' for her, and every round on the phone with these screwballs means I've got to yank my desk out from the wall and extract the DSL modem to test the other phone jacks.

My wiring can't be finalized until it's working. My desk layout can't be finalized until it's working. The surrounding furniture layout can't be finalized until it's working. I can't relax until it's working and those three tasks are done.

I'm going to go have a cigarette and see if I can get the anger throttled back.
