I expect many things from a Bruce Campbell flick. Action, laughs, anti-hero heroics, puns and/or wordplay groaners, and more atmosphere than it knows what to do with. Evil Dead, Evil Dead 2, Army of Darkness - they all live up to those expectations, and are a hell of a lot of fun.

Bubba Ho-tep.... made me cry.

It has -all- of the above listed expectations... and a touching, tear-inducing ending. Ten minutes into the film, it's no longer a 'Campbell flick'... it's a visual novel, complete with flashbacks. It's not a horror film per se, nor is it a parody piece; instead, it's a story of old age and abandonment, with a splash of horror and parody thrown in to keep the audience watching. I went into it expecting something akin to AoD, and came out ... amazed. And reaching for a tissue. One of the most recurrent themes in the film deals with the lives of folk who've been abandoned, either from being past their prime or being of little 'use' to society and the throw-away manner they're treated. No one listens, no one cares, no one visits... not even for an aging veteran with a Purple Heart award...

If the dolly and the diddle haven't seen this, I recommend it. There's a good measure of overlap in movie tastes between the three of us; I think this one would land in the shared center, even if the reasonings were different.

*sad smile* Yes, that touches me. If you don't know why... well, I'm not going to explain; you either get it or you don't. The DVD's been sitting for almost three weeks, borrowed so that I could watch it, but there's simply been too much going on. Today... today my intended continuance of the search for an apartment was disrupted by the DSL being down. It finally synchronized about 20 minutes ago, right about time the movie ended. Which means I get to try and do some apt shopping now. At least I'm on line again.

Most movies that I rent/borrow get ripped, so I can hold onto a copy. This one... doesn't get ripped. Instead it goes on my 'buy' list, to show support for a worthy film to have in my library.

And now I'm going to fire up stuff and do the things I needed to do seven hours ago.
