That taken care of...
Megan's father's computer, or rather what's LEFT of his computer, is now sitting in my living room. Seventeen and a half hours of work, while installing the LAST of the bits that needed ... and there was a fat *CRACK* of suddenly freed current, and then the tower was dead and lifeless, and the monitor'd gone to a 'no signal' status. A bit of prodding proved conclusively that the aging 230w PSU... with a 1994 manufacture date, meaning it didn't owe anyone a damned thing... had blown. I passed the information along, and after a few moments agreed to go chase down another PSU the next morning (as it was 1:45 in the am). I went to bed wondering just how much damage the burnout had caused. Crawled out of bed this morning, poured coffee and thyroid meds down my throat, and went questing for a power supply in a slightly more functional state.

Seventy dollars later, I had a shiny new 400w PSU, and settled down with some of the diagnostic software I had. Processor checked out, memory showed no fault, CDROM drive was functional... but both of the drives were coming up with massive seek errors. Um. *sigh* So after all that work, everything gets blown to hell on the last step. I'll be building up the remaining Slot A Athlon 650 I have here and shipping the damned thing to him. Being home, with access to my parts bins/stacks/boxen/piles, there's no way in hell I'm going to put that kind of effort into a Socket 7 Pentium class machine. But I'm seriously fried as a result. Fortunately, the old man was standing in the hallway when the old PSU blew... and knew enough to know that that was 'a very bad thing'.

*rubs her temples* Okay. Time to change into something more comfy, have a smoke and a soda, then fire up FireChat and Savitar and see what kind of trouble I can cause.
