Jun. 9th, 2004 02:34 pmI'm up, showered, dressed, and waiting for Megan to get in from work so that I can head out for the hospital. As is usual, the one time I /need/ her to be let out early, she's stuck behind a large pile of paperwork. If she consistently worked full hours, our financial woes would be a bit less... but it seems the only time she gets more than four and a half hours is when I REALLY need to be someplace.
We talked last night, and she'll likely be staying here. There're a half dozen reasons for that, really... she's got a pile of sewing work to do, being in my grandfather's presence leaves me VERY edgy, being in any sort of hospital makes me VERY edgy (imagine what it's like when I'm the patient... I feel for any nurse that has to cope with me as my paranoia and terror runs wild), and I know from watching her pace wearily around the house that she got precious little sleep last night. Which stacks up to Ellie+Megan=Armageddon. Not for the first time, I wish I wasn't such a cold, calculating bitch when I'm under full load... keeping the Beast chained under those circumstances becomes a very elaborate game of hide and go seek.
At least I'm feeling semi-balanced today. I'm not sure where the calm came from, but I'm sure's hell not going to question it overmuch. I'm really hoping that the doctors can patch grandpa up; losing a leg would take one of the few joys he has left away from him. Since my paternal grandmother's death 12 years ago, the only thing grandpa brightens up for is a bit of traveling with the towed RV that he and grandma bought 15 years ago. In spite of being nearly 80, he's positively spry when it comes to working on or traveling with that beast (to give you a clue, it's got 2/3's the square footage of my house). While he and I have a strained relationship at best, I don't want to see him trapped in his house and bereft of his only remaining passion. I understand that particular equation entirely too well, you know?
This is the second time I've keyed part of this entry; the power blipped out for about 20 mins... and much to my surprise, Xjournal didn't lose the entire entry, only the last paragraph of it. And yes, John, I know you were pushing me to switch from iJournal... now I understand why. :p
In other news, my precious B&W G3 is now running OS X 10.3.4, and I have to say I'm quite happy with some of the changes and tidbits I've found. It boots faster, has fewer of the I'm Busy! hesitations, and the improvements to Safari's stability are marvelous. The revised Finder interface is also quite spiff, and I continue to be amazed at what a 400mhz processor can handle. And before anyone flames me, try this:
This is NOT to say that the Mac is 'superior'; I still have (and will CONTINUE to have) serious issues with hardware compatibility, parts availability, grossly inflated prices, ... and the lack of games that I like (which isn't an Apple problem, but a problem with idiot companies who don't see the value in porting their products... which was also one of the biggest problems with OS/2 so many years ago). *hugs the G3* I adore this little beast, but none of the platforms/OSs/3rd party support is perfect. There are quirks to all of them. When it comes to available information on architecture and standards, the Intel-class beasts win hands down. Personally, just to satisfy my 'mad tinker' mentality, I'd really like to see OS X re-engineered for the Intel architecture, and WinXP reworked for the Mac architecture. For curiousity's sake, I'd like to see comparisons on an even playing field.
Yes, I know I'm babbling. I'm trying very hard to keep my mind occupied. I think I'm going to go have a smoke while I'm waiting for the other machines to boot.
*hugs*

- Get a G3 400mhz machine, and a P-II 400
- Install the full blown OS X on the G3
- Install the operating system of your choice on the P-II 400... but install it ALL, all the eyecandy and widgets. Fair is fair, here, and I'm not talking about minimal installs
- Fire up a tabbed browser with 15 graphics heavy tabs, fire up some mp3s, start a GUI-driven mail client, and a GUI driven LiveJournal client on /both/. Yes, all at once
- Watch the Intel architecture machine spasm and choke... because I'll be on the G3, busily surfing onwards long before the Intel machine brings everything up.
