Apr. 27th, 2004 06:28 pmHrm. Okay, so in spite of the rain and general ickiness outside, I'm up and active. I finished folding some towels, put a load in the washer, and decided to sit down and watch the movie I'd borrowed: Alien3. Now I have fond memories of 1, 2, and even 4, so it was with a certain amount of glee that I brought it home. I'd read a thousand different potshots at the film, but had never managed to see it... and I was certain that the critics had missed the point.
The tag line for the first film was In space, no one can hear you scream...
After watching both the Theatrical Release and the Special Edition, I think an appropriate tag line for this film would be In space, no one can find the plot...
There was not a /single/ 'BOO!' moment. Routine, predictable, and mechanical. Don't get me wrong, it's not ALL bad... Charles Dutton puts in a wonderful performance.
What, were you expecting more? Sorry. Sigourney Weaver apparently acted for this film while sleepwalking, the cop-out killing of Hicks and Newt off screen sucked life out of it, poor CGI utilized for the alien was (in a word) lame, and general cheap looking sets were too damned distracting. There may've been other good performances, but I missed them in the fog.
HOWEVER: I do recommend taking the time to watch the Special Edition. The return of 31 minutes worth of footage restored a lot to it. At times, there're even hints of plot and character development. Whoever was responsible for the editing of the film to create the Theatrical Release should be tossed into the baboon cage at a local zoo as a toy for the inhabitant. Fox's corporate drones need to be kept OUT of the business of making movies.
Bleah. :p
I believe I'm going to take some time now and play FF X. I need to wash the bad taste from my mouth, and I've only got an hour till dinner.
*hugs*
