I see the surgeon on Wednesday.

It was supposed to be an ordinary followup; instead it's an evaluation to determine if I'm to go back into the brace until further notice. The physical therapy sessions have turned into interesting studies in pain and self flagellation; I'm very aware that this is my own doing.

About a week and a half ago, I had planned a small gathering of some of my beefier friends to assist me in moving furniture in my room around. It was the third time I'd scheduled such a thing, knowing that some of what needed moving really was beyond my limits alone. Of particular concern was the desk... 75lbs unloaded and drawers out.

And for the third time in a row, all of my help bailed on me at the last minute. *shrugs* Shit happens, and bad luck and all that, but it set me off pretty majorly. Rather than attempt a fourth moving party, I gird my loins for solo combat and set to doing it myself. Most everything was rolling exactly according to plan, until I went to lever the desk into its final spot. Sitting on the floor beside it with my foot braced for leverage, I grabbed hold and pulled... and then watched time do that wonderful dilation as the desk simply flipped in place and landed on the right leg. Specifically, across the side of the recently repaired knee. It was apparently the resulting muscle spasm from the impact that did the harm.

The therapist, Dave, has slowly stepped through a set of tests to try and identify the problem without further aggravating it... but the sessions are leaving me hurting very badly after. What's been determined is that stability wise, the knee is still stable as a rock. The ACL (anterior 2112cruciate ligament) and PCL (posterior cruciate ligament) are intact and (I'm told) far more solid than most would be at this stage of the rehab. The LCL (lateral collateral ligament) also seems solid and stable. The MCL (medial collateral ligament) is the one at issue, here. For reference, I dug up an exploded diagram of the knee HERE. Dave's opinion is that it's somewhere in the grey zone between a Grade I and Grade II sprain; the fact that there's pain would seem to rule out a full tearing of it, which means it -will- heal.

The question is how long will it take. There's also the brace itself; the one I have is already broken in two points, held together with my mad science repairs... and they're expensive beasties. :(

My mood hasn't been very good these last few days; I'm alternating between being at the brink of tears and being stoned out of my gourd on painkillers. This has been less than fun.

And knowing it's my own damned fault isn't helping one bit.

Yup, it was your own damned fault, silly one...but beating yourself up over it isn't going to help either your mood or your situation, so resolve not to do anything like that again (okay, anything like that might be too large of a category, so we'll narrow it to just THAT... *snerk*), and move on to fixing it. That means healing. That means putting up with the PT pain, and doing what your docs say to do.

Love you. Now cut it out. :)
