Odds & Ends

I'm not sure why, but Semagic (the client I use on the PC for updating my journal) has decided to punk me. It opens clean, but as soon as I start typing it goes apeshit and crashes. I'll put a note up on the Semagic community and see what I get back; hopefully it's a simple problem. In the interim, I'm using LochJournal (found at [livejournal.com profile] lochj_announce. It's... very busy. There seem to be a lot of additional things jacked into it; creeping features, I'd guess. Or feeping creatures, which ever you prefer. It's pretty, and the 'new post' window is clean and complete, so I don't have any actual complaints. It's just that I'm much more used to the Semagic interface... but it'll do nicely for the moment.

*mutters* iTunes just crashed. *shakes her head* It uses a fairly sizeable memory footprint... as does News File Grabber, my usenet scan/download too. So as iTunes tries to load, it promptly locks up because it can't get enough RAM space. I've been using WinAmp as a substitute, but clicked the wrong button. Once I'm mobile, this machine gets a heart transplant, and will end up with a full gig of RAM instead of the 512mb it has now. Granted, PC133 memory is a bit slower than PC2100, but the net gain is worth it.

For those interested in such things, I thought I'd provide a link to the gizmo strapped across the top of the recently operated-upon knee: The DonJoy Iceman. With a full tub of ice, it'll hit a shiver-producing 32 degrees. Fortunately, there's a primitive flow meter doohickey that lets me adjust the temperature. I much prefer 40-45 degrees, thank you. But apparently the biggest concern in the wake of knee surgery is swelling; I'm not sure what said swelling would damage, though. I am not a doctor, so I'm just trying to do what I'm told. Blessedly I'm allowed the NSAIDs again, and my full battery of medications are back online. My mood's been noticeably better as well, and the Percocet 7.5/500's are keeping me kinda stoned. I've been told that I'm 'entertaining' this way, to which I responded with a juicy Bronx Cheer.

On the technical front, many thanks go to [livejournal.com profile] corona688 for his aid in a bit of web window shopping. He managed to find something almost $7 cheaper than I had. :) The Alpha Omega 5.1 Digital Sound USB Audio Controller is just exactly what I need to fix the no sound issue on the ThinkPad A21m. Now I just need to scrape together the $22.41 to actually buy the silly thing. UPS Ground shipping is a whopping $8.42... it's the cheapest shipping they offer.

The laptop now has installs of Adobe Acrobat Reader, Trillian, VideoLan VLC Player, Java JRE, and Lux, as well as a functioning copy of the Ragnarok Online client; it's fast enough to do RO, but the video and memory aren't sufficient to run Guild Wars. Oh well.

In the Random Oddness category, we've got a couple of new entries:
  • PocketChapel: Quoted from the website: PocketChapel is a free christian sofware altar for your computer desktop. *blink* *blinkblink* I'm downloading it. I can't resist it; this I've got to see.
  • Therianthropy: Wow. The furry folk will love this one. I can't honestly say I disagree with it, but I'm not looking to get on the bandwagon. *soft chuckle* Regardless of whether it's accurate, it still marks folk as 'freak' to the by and large populace... and I'm already carrying several of those tags. I'll just quietly munch my carrots and keep moving, thanks.
  • elisabeth is worn out.
Sleep when you're dead! Whether it's emotionally or physically, you're exhausted. Have you considered sleeping pills? I took them when I had mono, and they made everything better.
brought to you by interim32. wanna know your lj's moodring color? enter your user name and hit the button. (discussion thread)

Now that's just plain creepy. It probably scans the mood tags, though. Moving right along...
  • Pennsylvania Legislators Bend Taxpayers Over Barrel Without Lube: A good reason to not re-elect -any- of the current legislators. *shakes her head* Brazen and shameless theft under the guise of law, this one.
  • This one's just odd: Woman Pulls In Her Garage; Mountain Goat Jumps On Hood.
  • When Squirrels Attack (or) Spanky's Last Stand: ...*giggles* 'm sorry. The visual here is a scream.
  • Fuzzy Has Bad Day
  • And last, but not least, The Gene Pool Needs A Little Chlorine.
Hokie, enough babbling. Gonna go find something simple to do.
*hugs and cuddles*

::hugs and kisses:: I use a similar boot & margarita maker tub for my ankle (which is still not fixed, btw).

Lots of love flowing to you, sweetie :*
