Mansion's going to be getting reinstalled... I mistyped a URL to get one of my security programs and got a takeover virus instead. It'll be easier this time since I have all the right drivers already. I'll be offline until the install is done, and AVG and Spybot will go on it asap.

Amen. I think somewhere along the line I lost my touch. It's a bit distressing, you know? I've got the main install done, and am doing the Windows Upchuck routine now. AVG and Spybot are both downloaded via my laptop for immediate install once SP3 is in place. I feel like an utter moron; this never used to happen to me...

It's not that you've degraded - the game's got harder since you last played. Independent tests now show that an unpatched Windows machine will be compromised after being online for about four minutes. There's all the stuff you used to deal with, plus dozens of new vectors and techniques.

I think that this is something where there's not going to be a technical solution - malware authors should be treated like terror suspects are. Social solutions FTW.

My intended solution is mostly in place. The machine will get a full install and all patches PLUS AVG and Spybot before it's ever plugged into the LAN. I'll secure it the hard way.

I'm very tired of fighting with this machine. Victory will be mine, even if it requires ripping someone's veins out with my teeth (thank you Arlo Guthrie).
